Have you ever wondered, why do we crash? You have wondered why the most serious accidents occur at home or on the road and what is the common cause of these accidents or the quietest enemy of your safety. It is called: Complacency.
"Sharon Melendez, who was only 28 years old, had a very important meeting at the door and was more than 10 minutes late. He was speeding up his car at full speed, he could not let that important meeting happen with that client that he said was very special Juan had forgotten to put on his safety belt coupled with his more than 10 years of experience behind the wheel texting with his boss using his cell phone, explaining a thousand excuses why he would be late to the office Frustrated, in a hurry and complacent he forgot little by little, all the good lessons that his driving instructor taught him when he had been a young teenager for more than a decade since he was looking for a driver's license. It was then that he suddenly only heard a great blow on his right side of the co-driver of his car, the loud crunch of glass and a great force that drove him to the glass, steering wheel and seat, and after that, he only heard and felt a gra n silence "
Like Sharon and another 36,000 deaths that occur each year in the United States on roads, they are part of the statistics of people who forget and put their safety over the excess of trust, or also called complacency. Complacency is invisible, imperceptible, shows no signs and is hidden in our attitudes and way of thinking. For a moment we forget our integrity, we trust ourselves to drive in a kind of autopilot which we believe guides us, but rather blinds us and makes us ignorant of the risks and potential accidents.
Unfortunately, this state of consciousness, complacency, is very common to find in most people. It is said that more than 90% of the causes of accidents are caused by decisions of the person, 5% of other people around them and the remaining 5% by aspects, equipment and natural phenomena that we could never effectively control.
Now if we know that 90% of the causes of accidents occur due to our decisions, what are we waiting to start changing? So let's make a retrospective of our habits, actions and decisions, and try to change, today! Everything that could hurt us and cause an accident.
It is indeed good behavioral habits which will allow us to decrease complacency. Larry Wilson in his book Inside Out explains how overconfidence can be solved by constantly practicing techniques such as:
The observation of our small mistakes or near misses. To understand its cause and detect the motivator we can change the attitudes that originate the behavior that led us to the error or near accident.
Analyze complacent states in other people that cause them to perform unsafe acts that may cause an accident. When we see a driver on the road who drives improperly and insecurely, we can reflect and commit ourselves to not replicating these same behaviors, making sure we drive correctly.
Finally, working to improve our habits for safety. It will allow us to polish our attitudes: When making sure to turn on the light in the corridor before traveling, observing through the rearview mirror before changing lanes, never inserting the hand or other limb into equipment, machinery or point susceptible to entrapment or crushing, placing the belt before starting the car, etc.
Now that we know what the silent enemy of your security is, what do you expect to implement these tips and start improving today?
Let us become aware of our actions, We overcome complacency and be safe at all times!
