Perhaps we have sometimes heard some phrases such as: "Safety is a Priority", "The most important thing for us is Safety", "Safety is First". And indeed! Safety must be the most important, however, let's face it: Safety is sometimes the last thing we think about or give a lower priority to other needs.
On some other occasions, we may also have heard that it is said that "Safety is not negotiable", however we return to the same situation: it is common to see how Safety is exchanged for other priorities given other personal or external interests. Let's be honest!
It is then that we must ask ourselves: What is Safety really? Why do we keep leaving it in another priority? Or do we continue negotiating with it as if it were an "auctioned" merchandise in the supermarket.
The answer is very simple: Safety is and must be a value of each person, group, country and society. Safety in a habit that, when put into practice, becomes a habit and finally a culture. Just as each of us has the value of honesty, understanding, commitment, companionship and teamwork. It is then that Safety is a value that we must refine by putting it into practice, taking care of ourselves and the people around us.
Safety should not be a momentary emotion, a corrective measure after an accident, an action after a fine by an authority or even a slogan or certification for a company. The value of Safety is lived: from our person, from our home!
When deciding to check the conditions of the tires of our vehicles, put on our seat belts, silence our cell phone while driving, avoid texting when walking through aisles and pedestrian streets, wear our safety glasses, put on our safety helmet and respect the safety devices. But it is also the sense of protection of our loved ones, our partners, friends and anyone around exposed to an accident risk.
Like any habit, the Value of Safety is done through practice, practice and more practice. Let's be aware, let's review our "habits" and detect which are those that expose ourselves to the risks of accident or others. It's actually very simple!
The decision starts with you. Start today!
